Whale-Inspired SAMU: A Triple-Function Training Chair

The name SAMU, which evokes a sense of fun, is fitting for a chair that offers triple functionality. It serves as an armchair, a training chair with a table, and storage. The design team has successfully infused the smooth and sinuous shape of a whale into SAMU, creating a product with a strong personality that is ideal for co-working spaces, open spaces, training rooms, and informal waiting areas.

The chair's design is not just about aesthetics; it also offers ergonomic benefits. SAMU's tail can be used as a backrest when sitting with the tail behind, or as a table when sitting with the tail in front. The interior structure is composed of steel rod tubes covered by polyurethane injection foam of various densities, ensuring comfort and durability. The chair is also mounted on wheels for easy movement.

The production process of SAMU involves the use of high-quality steel frames from Baosteel and high-density, fire-proof foam. The dimensions of the chair are 490*865*765, making it a compact yet comfortable seating solution. The design team has also ensured that the chair is easy to use, whether in a casual, formal, or fun setting.

The project, which started in May 2017 in Italy, was completed in January 2018 in China. It was exhibited at the China International Furniture Fair (CIFF) in March 2018. The design process involved overcoming challenges such as imitating whale postures in the chair design and ensuring no wrinkles on the shape. The result is a chair that is not only functional and aesthetically pleasing but also brings a sense of joy and freedom, much like the whale it is inspired by.

SAMU has been recognized for its innovative design, winning the Silver A' Furniture Design Award in 2018. This prestigious award is given to designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise and innovation, technical excellence, and artistic skill. SAMU, with its creative design and functional features, certainly fits the bill.
